The following link describes a study done in 2006 in Bolivia. After having taken samples of lettuce and thoroughly washing each sample to prepare it for human consumption, over 53% of the samples still had parasites.

The findings via this study suggest that lettuce cannot be washed effectively and that more needs to be done to prepare lettuce for human consumption.
